I had never heard of VIPKID until February! Have you heard of it? You can teach English online to children in China with the lessons provided for you and make up to $22/hour without leaving your house or communicating with parents. At first it sounded too good to be true, but I looked into it and found this…
Hmmmm…. Maybe it’s legit then.
In English it says, “It only took me 5 minutes to decide to invest in VIPKID.” Since this happened in August, the company has grown exponentially and is in great need of teachers! You have nothing to lose by finding out if it is a good fit for you.
I went through the hiring process at the end of February and have been talking about it a lot to my teacher friends and everyone has the same questions, so I put together some information for you to answer some basic questions and give an overview of what you need to know! I know what you’re thinking- as teachers we already have SO much on our plates already!! But wait- THERE IS NO LONGER A MINIMUM NUMBER OF HOURS A WEEK YOU HAVE TO HAVE AVAILABLE. Truly make your schedule based on what works for your family!
Feel free to use my referral link if you decide to sign up: https://t.vipkid.com.cn/?refereeId=3683472 If you email me with the email you used, I’d love to walk you through the process and help you get hired and share some resources I found. (When you teach your first class, we’ll both get an extra $25 on our next check. Score!)
I didn’t have anyone to bounce ideas off of/ask a few questions to when I went through my mock lessons and it would have been SO helpful to know a few things ahead of time… So seriously don’t hesitate to comment here or email me katie(at)decoratemylife.com with any questions you have. Sometime soon I need to make a little video with the feedback they gave me so it can help someone else!
The PPT Lessons are provided for you. I just read through it ahead of time and make sure I understand the teacher directions. In a little box on my desk, I have some letter flashcards from the Target $1 spot and a little whiteboard with magnetic letters in case I need them. If the lesson focuses on a specific letter, it’s fun to look around your house with things that start with that letter to make it a little more engaging for the kids. Other than that, you don’t need to prep anything!
If you stop and think about it, this is really powerful for the US and China (available in other English speaking countries too). How cool is it to do this from across the world without leaving your house and even gain regular students that you get to know over time and see their growth!? I love the concept of it and the opportunity to gain more experience teaching ESL.
