Everything You Need To Know about VIPKID

I had never heard of VIPKID until February!  Have you heard of it?  You can teach English online to children in China with the lessons provided for you and make up to $22/hour without leaving your house or communicating with parents.  At first it sounded too good to be true, but I looked into it and found this…

Hmmmm…. Maybe it’s legit then.

VIP KID kobe

In English it says, “It only took me 5 minutes to decide to invest in VIPKID.”  Since this happened in August, the company has grown exponentially and is in great need of teachers!  You have nothing to lose by finding out if it is a good fit for you.

I went through the hiring process at the end of February and have been talking about it a lot to my teacher friends and everyone has the same questions, so I put together some information for you to answer some basic questions and give an overview of what you need to know!   I know what you’re thinking- as teachers we already have SO much on our plates already!!  But wait- THERE IS NO LONGER A MINIMUM NUMBER OF HOURS A  WEEK YOU HAVE TO HAVE AVAILABLE.  Truly make your schedule based on what works for your family!

Feel free to use my referral link if you decide to sign up: https://t.vipkid.com.cn/?refereeId=3683472 If you comment here or email me with the email you used to sign up, I’ll add you to my private group on facebook so you can watch the videos I made to help coach you through the interview process and the other teachers I’ve referred will be happy to answer your questions too. (When you teach your first class, we’ll both get an extra $25 on our next check.  Score!)  Happy to help you get started : )

I didn’t have anyone to bounce ideas off of/ask a few questions to when I went through my mock lessons and it would have been SO helpful to know a few things ahead of time… So seriously don’t hesitate to comment here or email me katie(at)decoratemylife.com with any questions you have.

The PPT Lessons are provided for you.  I just read through it ahead of time and make sure I understand the teacher directions.  In a little box on my desk, I have some letter flashcards from the Target $1 spot and a little whiteboard with magnetic letters in case I need them.  If the lesson focuses on a specific letter, it’s fun to look around your house with things that start with that letter to make it a little more engaging for the kids.  Other than that, you don’t need to prep anything!

If you stop and think about it, this is really powerful for the US and China (available in other English speaking countries too).  How cool is it to do this from across the world without leaving your house and even gain regular students that you get to know over time and see their growth!?  I love the concept of it and the opportunity to gain more experience teaching ESL.

You need a computer (not an iPad) with a webcam, and you will need headphones. I used earbuds for my interview, but you will want a headset with a mute button for when you are hired. That is the only equipment! : ) VIPKID provides the lessons and classroom portal video platform.

        hi Kate,

Thank you for sharing this page!
I see that we need a laptop, not an iPad… but I have the newest iPad Pro, and wonder if this could be sufficient, do you know? I won’t have a new computer for another few months.

        Thank you again!

        • says

Hi Bee, Sorry that I’m just now seeing your post! Students have a mobile app, but as of right now the teacher app is only for schedule/updates/feedback etc. I think eventually it will be an option, but you can not teach from an iPad as of right now.

Hi Katie, thank you for the information! I’ll be starting the application process today. VIP Kid sounds like a wonderful opportunity!

  2. Meredith says

Thanks for all the info! I signed up using your code.
Can you tell me if there is anything you eventually have to pay for? And what type of taxes/fees get taken out? For example, if you’ve made $3000, what do you actually get after taxes?
Also, what are a few things you wish someone told you before you started?

    • says

Sorry that I’m just now seeing your blog comment, Meredith LOL after you’ve been in my facebook group for a few months now and already hired HA! So glad you’re loving your experience as a VIPKID teacher so far!

      • Adriane says

How does it work with taxes? I know you guys are considered independent contractors but do you save a certain amount per month or how does that work? This is the only thing stopping me from joining. I guess just not certain on how that works

        • says

Hi Adriane, great question! I set aside a % each month for taxes based on my income bracket. However, I also have documented all office expenses, internet bill, school supplies, home office dimensions, etc since getting hired to deduct on my taxes. There are a LOT of deductions you can make to compensate. If you do sign up, I put a lot of tax information in my facebook group. My father-in-law is a CPA and gave me all the information to post about paying taxes quarterly in case people want to talk to their accountant about it. I did not pay quarterly this year, but will have to next year to not receive a penalty since I also work full time.

  3. Sue Carter says

Hi! I’m SO glad I found you. I had my interview with Nick. I scored a 91. I’ve been teaching over 35 years and I’m 60 years old. Is it really worth it?

I haven’t done my 6 hours of mock lessons yet. Nick said I needed the room to look more inviting – like a classroom. I was doing it in my bedroom as that is where we have ou MAC.

Please help me decide. I want to make a lot of extra money, but it does seem like a lot of extra work.

Thanks so much. Your quick response would be appreciated!

Hi Sue! So sorry I’m just now seeing your comment : ) It is totally worth it in my opinion.. I just use a gray wall of my office, but I wrote “Teacher Katie” with an orange sharpie on a blank white canvas behind my desk and there is also a floral painting I did on a canvas behind my desk. Nothing fancy or educational like a classroom, it just looks inviting and you can’t see any area of my home in the background.

  4. Barbara Stone says

Thanks for the info, Katie! I’m even more excited now that I’ve read about you’re positive experience with this company.

  5. Carla Childress says

Thank you for the information! I have been looking for an opportunity just like this! I am a teacher by choice and a dyslexia therapist by God’s plan. I am working from my home currently conducting dyslexia therapy with individual students.

My Mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in March of 2016. Both of my parents require a good bit of assistance hence, my reason for working out of my home. Thank you again for the detailed information.

    • says

Hi Carla, Just seeing your comment. My mom went through the same journey with my grandparents- hugs to you! It led to her retirement from 38 years of teaching because it was so inflexible, so I so hope this has been a good experience for you. Were you hired with VIPKID? Email me if you have any questions at all. katie@decoratemylife.com

  8. Michelle S. says

I would like to apply, but want to make sure I have the necessary equipment before starting the process. My iMac has a built-in camera. Do I still need to purchase both a webcam and a headset? Or would the iMac camera be sufficient?

    • says

I just use my Mac built in camera! I did my first interview with earbuds, but bought a cheap headset (like $12) after that so they could hear my phonics sounds clearly.

  9. Jamie Lutz says

Hello I am curious what all documents need to be sent in in order to verify eligibility? Do we need to send in diploma and transcripts or just one? Will they call the school to verify our grad status? Also what about ID- can we send in drivers license or does it have to be our passport? Are our teaching videos recorded for review by VIPKID once we are hired and in a real class? Or once a class session ends we are unable to review it? Also I saw we are to record an intro video – are we able to change it out or once its put up, it must stay on there?

  10. Jaclyn says

Hello! I would like to be added to your Facebook group! I am trying to figure out if this is for me. I have two kids, a newborn and a 3-year-old! Thanks!

  11. Franna Baldari says

I have already started the process. I am working on preparing my demo lesson for the interview process.
What program or software is used with the headset? Skype or something with Google?

    Thank you,
