You may remember me talking about my grandma in this post: In Memory.  January marked two years since she passed away.  She left a legacy in so many heirlooms around our home- the quilts on our bed, dish towels with the days of the week embroidered on them, doilies (these are coming back folks), and her black and white wedding photo on our wall.  There are a few things in daily life though that always remind me of memories with Grandma Swiney: sewing machines, Rummikub, chocolate cake, when people say “I reckon”, word searches, and Wrigley gum. My Grandma Swiney always kept Wrigley gum in her purse.

As a child, I always looked forward to being seated after the worship time at church. That’s when my grandma would lean over, tear a piece of Extra® gum in half, and hand my sister and I each half a piece. It was always, always half a piece. We’re still not sure why.  It was just accepted.

Then my little sister and I would spend the next few minutes in silence seeing who could pull off the biggest piece of the silver wrapper.  Did you ever do that?  Everyone knows you can pull the foil off the paper and press it to a surface to adhere it.  Here’s a visual.  Obviously I’m a little out of practice, but back in the day the back cover of my Bible became covered in foil pieces from wrappers in church with Grandma Swiney.

This may seem like such a little memory, but it stuck with me.  I was so excited to find the new Extra® 35-stick pack in the checkout line at CVS. It was super easy to find, and I love the durable plastic case that is made of recyclable materials.  The packages come in both Extra® Gum Spearmint and Extra® Gum Polar Ice®.

To this day, when someone leans over and offers me a piece of gum, I expect it to be a half piece.  There are plenty to go around in the 35-stick pack, so you truly can “Give Extra, Get Extra”;  but this Sunday my sister and I will split a piece in memory of Grandma Swiney.

I really love this story so much! I think Wrigley Gum was huge with all grandmothers. Mine use to tape a piece in birthday cards for us kids. #client

Oh that’s precious, Amy! I love hearing the personal connection or memory different people have with a particular product/brand.. especially an American favorite like Wrigley!

Katie, I just loved this! My Grandma Jennie was my world when I was growing up, I used to tell people she was an “angel on earth”. Memories are such a treasured gift:)

This is such a sweet post. My daddy often had Wrigley’s Juicy Fruit Gum in his pocket that he was quick to share, and half pieces were big with the ladies in our family, too. Many of the things you listed that remind you of your grandmother, remind me of mine. She made beautiful quilts, embroidered, crocheted and tatted — not to mention her flower garden. Sweet memories.

This makes me smile, Dorothy! Memories with our grandparents are so treasured. Ha! I hadn’t heard of anyone else doing half pieces, so that must be a thing from that time period. Thank you for sharing! : )
