AWBU Recap

I completely stepped out of my comfort zone to sign up for the 3rd Annual Arkansas Women Bloggers Unplugged Conference.  Arkansas Women Bloggers  hosts a conference at a different place in Arkansas each year.  This year it was right outside of Little Rock at Ferncliff Camp and Conference Center so it was about a 4 hour drive.  I didn’t know a single person going.  At first, I was going to pay more for the hotel style room because the retreat style bunk rooms sounded basically.. intimidating.  Too many new people at once.  But my husband told me if I was going to go, I might as well build as many relationships as I could.  (He’s smart like that.)

I found out the night before I left that my neighbor, Whitney, is a blogger too!  I officially knew one person out of 100 going.

Did you read my 26 before 26 list?  Going to a blogging conference was on my list of goals for this year.  The conference kind of snuck up on me pretty fast and I was completely unprepared… my business cards still had my maiden name on them.  I grabbed a random notebook from my classroom to take notes in as I was rushing out the door.  My clothes for the 5K were snatched from the floorboard of my car.  Somehow I made it there after a crazy week at work!

In route to AWBU

It is always kind of awkward making new friends as adults, but the girls in my cabin were awesome.  We were instant friends!  It was so fun hearing advice from other bloggers and hearing their stories.

Some of my favorite workshops were Photoshop for Beginners, Authenticity vs. Word Vomit, So You Want to Vlog?, and Bloggers as the New Breed of Travel Writers.  Watch Taylor’s (Pink Heels Pink Truck) vlog she created from our vlogging workshop!

Boo Mama

Guess who I met!?!?  Sophie Hudson (aka Boo Mama)!  Have you read her book, A Little Salty to Cut the Sweet?  See her blog recap of the weekend here.  Sophie actually seemed genuinely excited that I read her book.  We all got a copy of it, so now I have three!  I bought two for gifts before the conference.  It’s just that good.

New Balance sponsored a 5K Sunday morning which was super fun!

There are so many local bloggers that live really close to me.  I had no idea!  If you live in Arkansas and have a blog (big or small!) this is the conference for you.  If not, look for a blogger get together in your area.

Thanks to all these wonderful sponsors of AWBU that made a great weekend possible!

Katie – you and I were in the same boat — I literally knew 2/100 of the gals attending. I also decided to go for the full camp experience and head to the bunkhouse. So glad I did! Your blog looks great! Thanks for sharing the contact info of your site designer — I hope to check into all that real soon!

Hi Katie! Nice blog and great post! I felt a lot like you. I showed up at the conference not knowing a single person! I actually didn’t even know about the conference (or AWB) until three days beforehand. I blogged about the awkwardness of that yesterday. But the conference was so much fun and so inspiring. I can’t wait to go again next year. I remember seeing you but I don’t think we met…so…HI!!
